Streaming data usage depends on the average total bitrate and the time you watch. A useful decimal estimate is GB = Mbit/s × hours × 0.45. This guide explains the calculation, its limits and a simple way to measure a real session.

How to calculate streaming data usage

There are eight bits in a byte and 3,600 seconds in an hour. Using decimal gigabytes, Mbit/s × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 gives GB per hour. That reduces to bitrate × 0.45. Multiply again by the number of hours watched.

For example, an average total stream bitrate of 8 Mbit/s over two hours gives 8 × 2 × 0.45 = 7.2 GB. This describes the assumed stream, not the speed of your internet plan. A 100 Mbit/s connection does not mean every video consumes data at 100 Mbit/s.

Streaming data usage: calculated example table

These are arithmetic examples at a constant total bitrate, not measurements of particular services, subscriptions or devices. The last column assumes two hours a day for 30 days.

Measure your own session: a reusable worksheet

  1. Record the device, app, date and selected quality setting. Note the data counter before playback, preferably a counter for that individual device.
  2. Pause other transfers on that device. A whole-router counter may include downloads, updates and other household devices.
  3. Play an authorised stream and record the actual playback duration.
  4. Read the counter again. The difference is the observed data usage for that session, subject to what your counter includes.
  5. Repeat with other programmes or at other times. A single observation is not a reliable monthly average.

Copy this worksheet: Date: ___ · Device/app: ___ · Quality: ___ · Counter before: ___ · Counter after: ___ · Unit: ___ · Playback duration: ___ minutes · Difference: ___ · Other active transfers: ___.

If you observe 1.8 GB in 30 minutes, the observed hourly rate is 3.6 GB. Projecting that rate over 20 hours gives 72 GB, provided the conditions remain comparable. It is not a guarantee for the next month.

Why HD and 4K do not have one fixed data rate

Resolution alone does not determine bitrate. Codec, frame rate, scene complexity and the service’s quality settings matter. Adaptive streaming can change quality during playback. If you know only the video bitrate, audio and transmission overhead may add traffic; the formula’s examples assume the total bitrate.

A speed test measures connection performance under the test conditions. It does not measure the average bitrate of a later programme. Use suitable player information, service-specific guidance or an observed device data counter instead.

Decimal GB and binary GiB are different units. One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; one GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Keep units consistent when comparing a router display with a mobile plan allowance.

Practical ways to reduce data usage

Use a lower quality or data-saving option where the service offers one, stop unused playback and check the actual data counter when using a mobile hotspot. Changing from Wi-Fi to Ethernet does not inherently reduce the data required by the same stream, although it may improve connection stability.

Check your setup before choosing a plan

Record your device model, player and selected quality when measuring usage. If you want to explore our service, visit the English worldwide page for plans and device enquiries. Confirm your preferred programmes, device support, total price and any separate player licence costs before ordering.

Our stated offer includes one simultaneous connection: phones, computers and TVs are used in turn. A trial enquiry does not place an order; the 24-hour trial starts after confirmed activation. For the German-language offer, see plans and durations and device preparation.
